Dropkick Murphy's

Located in Cowgate, Dropkick Murphy’s is the most popular late night venue for students at the moment. It is labelled as a Irish pub/bar, however it fits in more as a club in the Edinburgh  student nightlife scene. Like most Irish pubs in the Grassmarket area, Dropkick’s has live music every day of the week, but also has its own special nights; on Tuesday’s it has Honky Tonk Tuesday, which involves country line dancing and free cowboy hats, and on Wednesday it has its own Karaoke night, named West Life Wednesday. It has its own student discount, which grants a discount on Spirits & Mixers plus Tennent’s/Magners.

What’s Fresh? recommends:

Get there earlier on Weekends - If you are looking to go out to Dropkick’s on a weekend, you will have to get there early, as it becomes packed and a long queue will form outside. Also, if you go earlier, you will have more chance of being able to get a seat/booth, which will save you from having to stand throughout the night, crammed.

Black Card - If you work in hospitality, which many students will as a part time job, Dropkick’s will offer a free Black Card to you. This allows for queue skip, and also some discounts on drinks. It is very useful to own one of these, especially if you end up frequenting Dropkick’s a lot over the year.

Do not overdo it! - Whilst it might be tempting to go Dropkick’s every night when you are a fresher, What’s Fresh? recommends to hold back, as it will end up ruining the venue for yourself.
